They do not tell you that you need to purchase the optional RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver to be able to use the traffic update function. Otherwise Tom-Tom’s are great GPS. I had a Magellan and it was so hard to update. You had to download a file and then use a DOS program to update it. With Tom-Tom, you just plug in the USB plug, start the HOME program and it updates all the maps.

Took the GPS out of the box, connected it to a computer with TomTom Home software installed. It immediately prompted me to create an account and when I did to update my maps because the shipping maps were out of date. Ok, sounds good. The sync process downloads new maps (fine), and then removes the existing maps from the device without backing them up first. Then it syncs new maps.
The device could never complete the syncing process of new maps. Regardless of the actual reality of the situation, the TomTom software would interrupt the sync stating that the GPS had been disconnected partway through the sync process. Nevermind that the device was still mounted to the computer, filesystem was browsable, and the GPS screen showed a do not disconnect notice. 3 hours and 6 attempts to sync maps later (on more than one computer), this has been boxed up and returned.
Two stars because the actual build quality was ok (except the mount, which had trouble staying in the locked slot at any time).

I have had 3 previous Tom Tom GPS units with no problems before
I was excited to get the larger 5″ screen and traffic, but ran into a lot of problems and am returning the unit
Problems
1) The unit kept falling off the window attachment
2) After 2 weeks, the traffic reciever doesn’t work
3) After driving 6 hours in 2 days, the battery still won’t hold a charge
4) Computer doesn’t recognize the GPS unit
5) Tom Tom service had too many steps to get to a resolution – after 3 attempts, I just gave up and returned the unit (if they had offered to ship a replacement unit, I would have tried it again, but, since they kept asking more questions on an obviously defective unit…)
I take very good care of my products – never dropped or damaged – since it really is too much of a hassle to return (I really wanted to keep it, therefore tried Tom Tom support, before realizing that it was a waste of time)
It is too bad since I really liked the size, features, and interface
Mine was most likely a bad example – but can’t waste anymore time

This is the best GPS I have ever owned. It tells you if there is traffic ahead and how long the delays will be. Lets you get around delays. Gives you different viewing options and is a nice wide screen. It quickly picks up the satellite signal, unlike my other GPS that took forever to get a signal. I am very pleased with this GPS and highly recommend it!

I glanced at the small insturction manual that came with the device for maybe 5 minutes. I then turned it on and it is so intuitive (and I’m no GPS guru or anything), that I was programming some routes within minutes. I like the fact that the device has a nice large screen and yet is very thin. I know some people have complained about where the connection is at the bottom of the device…that is really my only complaint. I even downloaded the lastest maps on the computer and then to the device. It does take awhile, but how often will the average person be doing that? Very nice display, turn by turn spoken directions are clear, and the screen adjusts for night driving. This is my first TomTom, after having a Magellan, and this is by far easier and has more features. I would recommend this device to anyone.
